How Elo works
If you enjoy photography, whether you are an amateur or a professional, our website is made for you. We offer an objective evaluation of your work, independent of the author’s recognition. Each photo’s rating reflects the opinions of the majority of users.
The uniqueness of our project lies in the fact that even a beginner photographer can become popular. On our site, what matters is not recognition or a name, but the ability to capture moments that inspire others.
We have developed a photo evaluation system based on the Elo algorithm: initially, each photo is assigned 140 points and begins participating in the voting on the main page. Users choose the better photo from a pair, with the winning photo gaining points and the losing one losing points. A victory over a high-rated photo increases your score more significantly than a win over a lower-rated photo.
The awarding and deduction of points depend on the current rating of the photo: the higher the rating, the more points are deducted (in case of a loss) and fewer points are awarded (in case of a win), and vice versa. Accordingly, if a photo with a lower rating wins, it receives more points than a higher-rated photo would upon winning. This system balances the ratings.
In the “Popular” section, photos are sorted based on their ratings: for all time, for the week, and for the month. In the latter two cases, popularity is determined not by the total number of points but by their growth over a certain period. This way, other users discover you, and your photos receive special awards that set them apart from the rest.
